The shrine is encircled by a ‘Chuttambalam’ (an enclosed verandah running around the building). The walls of the ‘Chuttambalam’ are adorned with fine murals depicting incidents and heroes in Puranas. And there is a cave within that opens out to a small pond where the water level remains steady regardless of climatic changes.

The Lake in which the Sanctum is situated is a large structure measuring 302 square feet (about 2 acres). To the right corner of the lake there is a cave with a gate. According to the priests of the temple, god Anantha Padmanabha went to Thiruvananthapuram through that cave. That is the reason for similarity in both the names.

According to the folk lore the temple’s lake is also home to a crocodile named Babiya, which is supposed to be the guard of the temple. It is believed that when one dies, another mysteriously takes its place. The crocodile is vegetarian one and the priests offer prasadam, and naivedyam to the crocodile 07.30 AM in the morning & 12.00 PM every day.
